Gum health plays a vital role in your overall health, yet gum disease is one of the most common dental conditions we see. Many people are surprised to learn they have it — often because it can progress quietly, with little or no pain in the early stages. At Distinctly Dental, periodontal treatment is all about understanding your gum health, stopping disease progression, and supporting your gums to heal in a calm, supportive environment.

What is periodontal disease?
The most common reason for adulthood periodontal disease (commonly known as gum disease) is bacteria building up around the teeth and beneath the gum line. Over time, this can lead to:
– Bleeding or swollen gums – Gum recession – Loose teeth due to bone loss – Persistent bad breath – Tooth loss and abscesses in advanced cases
The good news is that with the right care, gum disease can often be managed effectively — especially when caught early.
What is periodontal treatment?
Periodontal treatment focuses on managing the local and systemic factors that lead to inflammation in the gums to support the long-term gum health. Treatment is tailored to each patient and depends on the severity of the condition. The aim of periodontal care is to:
– Remove harmful bacteria and build-up from beneath the gum line – Diagnose the local factors such as suboptimal restorations or occlusal trauma – Reduce inflammation and bleeding – Allow the gums to heal and stabilise – Prevent further damage to teeth and supporting bone
Periodontal treatment is not about judgement — gum disease is extremely common, and many factors can contribute to it, including genetics, stress, general health, and previous dental care.
Your periodontal assessment: the first step
All periodontal care at Distinctly Dental begins with a comprehensive periodontal assessment with Dr Ezgi Cilingir, our experienced periodontal clinician.
This is a relaxed, 60-minute appointment where we take the time to fully understand your gum health. During the assessment, we will:
– Conduct a thorough examination of your gums – Measure the gum pocket depths around each tooth – Review any X-rays or dental records you may have – Diagnose the extent of gum disease – Talk through treatment options, timescales, and costs
You will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions, and everything will be explained clearly and honestly.

What happens during periodontal treatment appointments?
If treatment is recommended, appointments are planned carefully around your comfort and individual needs. Depending on your gum condition:
– Treatment may be completed in one longer visit or spread across multiple appointments – Local anaesthetic is used where needed to keep you comfortable – Appointments are unhurried and focused on gentle, thorough care
Before any treatment begins, you will always be given a clear plan, including how many visits are likely to be required and what to expect during and after each appointment.
Aftercare and long-term gum health
Periodontal treatment is not just about what happens in the chair — ongoing care is key to maintaining healthy gums. After treatment, we will:
– Offer personalised advice on home care techniques – Discuss maintenance appointments and monitoring – Support you with regular reviews to keep your gums stable
Our goal is to help you feel confident about managing your gum health long term.

Care for nervous or anxious patients
We understand that periodontal treatment can feel intimidating, particularly if you’ve had difficult dental experiences in the past.
Our team takes a calm, gentle, and reassuring approach at every stage. There is no pressure and no judgement — we move at your pace and make sure you feel informed and supported throughout your care. If you feel anxious, please let us know. Supporting nervous patients is something we do every day.

Referrals and self-referrals welcome
You do not need a referral to book a periodontal assessment with us. We welcome both:
– Referrals from other dental practices – Patients who are concerned about their gum health and wish to self-refer
If you have recent X-rays or dental records from another dentist, these can be helpful and may be shared with us in advance.
When should I book a periodontal assessment?
You may wish to book an assessment if you:
– Notice persistent bleeding when eating, brushing or flossing – Have been told you have gum disease – Are experiencing gum recession or loose teeth – Want reassurance about your gum health
Early assessment allows us to act sooner and often means simpler treatment.
