Etienne qualified from the University of Pretoria in 1989. After completing a year of national service, he entered General Medical Practice in Pretoria until May 2001. During this time Etienne was a shareholder in two Anaesthetic Day Clinics in Pretoria.
In 2001 he was recruited by Integrated Dental Holdings in the UK to set up sedation clinics in their practices. Etienne has been in full time dental sedation practise since May 2001. In 2003 Etienne was awarded a PDD.SED (a post graduate qualification in sedation and pain control) from the University of Stellenbosch, studying under Prof James Roelofse, a renowned world leader in sedation.
Further qualifications include: Advanced Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Paediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support, Immediate Life Support. Etienne is registered with the General Medical Council in the UK and the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
He is a member of the ADAS (Association of Dental Anaesthetists and Sedationists), SAAD (Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry) and SOSPOSA (Society of Sedation Practitioners of South Africa).
